Linear Oscillatory Cellular Thermocapillary Convection in Liquid Layers

چکیده
A linear stability analysis is performed on a thermal, stratified liquid layer with a deformable thermocapillary surface. The objective is to investigate the possibility and conditions for existence of oscillatory cellular convection in the linear thermocapillary system. In general, the principle of the exchange of stabilities for the onset of cellular convection in liquid layers with deformable surfaces may not hold, especially for systems with small Prandtl numbers. This study discloses the characteristics of a linear oscillatory convection and associated interfacial wave in a thermocapillary liquid layer. The Marangoni number for the onset of oscillatory convection as overstability as well as the corresponding wave number and frequency for various Prandtl and Crispation numbers are determined based on the linear stability theory. The characteristics for overstability in the thermocapillary system are treated for both surface cooling and heating cases. The regions for existence of overstability and the effects of the Prandtl and Crispation numbers are investigated.

A linear stability analysis of large-Prandtl-number thermocapillary liquid bridges
A linear stability analysis is applied to determine the onset of oscillatory thermocapillary convection in cylindrical liquid bridges of large Prandtl numbers (4 6 Pr 6 50). We focus on the relationships between the critical Reynolds number Rec, the azimuthal wave number m, the aspect ratio Γ and the Prandtl number Pr. A detailed Rec-Pr stability diagram is given for liquid bridges with various...
متن کاملConvection in two-layer systems with an anomalous thermocapillary effect
Recently, it was found that the anomalous thermocapillary effect (the interfacial tension increases with temperature) is typical for various liquid-liquid systems. We consider the combined action of buoyancy and thermocapillary instability mechanisms in systems with an anomalous thermocapillary effect on the interface. The problem is solved in both linear and nonlinear formulations. A special t...
متن کاملSurface tension-driven convection patterns in two liquid layers
Two superposed liquid layers display a variety of convective phenomena that are inaccessible in the traditional system where the upper layer is a gas. We consider several pairs of immiscible liquids. Once the liquids have been selected, the applied temperature difference and the depths of the layers are the only independent control parameters. Using a perfluorinated hydrocarbon and silicone oil...
متن کاملExperimental and numerical study of anomalous thermocapillary convection in liquid gallium
Thermocapillary Marangoni convection of liquid gallium was studied experimentally and numerically. A specially designed experimental setup ensured an oxide-free surface of the liquid gallium for a very long time. The convective flow at the free surface was found to be directed opposite to both buoyancy-driven and ordinary thermocapillary convection. The anomalous direction of the thermocapillar...
متن کاملActive control of oscillatory thermocapillary convection.
Active control of oscillatory thermocapillary flow was applied in an open cylindrical container filled with silicone oil. Thermocapillary convection was driven by imposing a radial temperature gradient on a flat free surface. The control was realized by locally heating the surface at a single position using the local temperature signal at a different position fed back through a simple algorithm...
